One of the largest municipal park managers in the nation, the Chicago Park District owns more than 8,800 acres of green space and our over 600 parks offer thousands of sports and physical activities as well as cultural and environmental programs for youth, adults and seniors. Park programs and events create hubs of positive activity thereby building community ties and reducing crime.

The Great Depression spurred the consolidation of the City of Chicago’s 22 independent park districts into a unified Chicago Park District in 1934.
